« Une femme de lettres », « Une femme sans importance », « Un lit parmi les lentilles »
Irène : c’est l’anglaise « parfaite ». Très attachée aux usages et à la bienséance, elle s’est donnée pour tâche de dénoncer tout ce qu’elle juge être des manquements à la morale. Pour tromper sa solitude, elle s’adonne donc à l’écriture de lettres où elle exprime réprobation et indignation…
Peggy : c’est la secrétaire « parfaite ». Du bureau à l’hôpital, en passant par le cabinet médical, elle raconte avec un enthousiasme inébranlable un quotidien fait de petits riens où tout un chacun l’utilise ou l’ignore, même quand se profile le bout du chemin…
Suzanne : épouse d’un vicaire anglican, elle nous confie avec humour, cynisme et clairvoyance le vide et l’hypocrisie de sa vie, et son « penchant » pour le vin de messe. Jusqu’au jour où, à court de Sherry, elle rencontre Monsieur Ramesh, un jeune épicier indien…

Dramaturge, scénariste et comédien, Alan Bennett est né en 1934 à Leeds en Grande-Bretagne.
Moulins à paroles est une traduction des « Talking Heads » d’Alan Bennett réalisée par Jean-Marie Besset.
D’abord conçu sous la forme d’ émissions de télévision réalisées pour la BBC, « Talking Heads » fut publié en 1992.
Cet ouvrage a contribué à faire d’Alan Bennett un auteur joué partout dans le monde.
Les choix dramaturgique :
« Ce sont des nouvelles réduites à l’essentiel, mises à nu, destinées à être lues à haute voix, car si j’ai un talent particulier, c’est mon oreille. » dit Alan Bennett de « Moulins à paroles ».
C’est donc tout naturellement la forme de la lecture à voix haute que nous avons privilégiée.
Mais sous la plume du dramaturge, ces monologues sont autant de portraits de femmes auxquelles il fallait donner corps et énergie, d’où la forme théâtralisée de ces lectures.
La simplicité du dispositif permet de créer la confidence dans le rapport direct avec le public afin qu’il soit en empathie avec chacun des personnages, et la petite musique de l’orgue de Barbarie anime le manège de ces vies qui tournent en rond.
